NEVER Too Late, NEVER Too Old--The Magic’s In the Music
The Unbelievable Uglies truly are back, and as goes the old adage of the wounded animal, “they are the most dangerous when they have nothing to lose”. Dangerously delightful, that is……..
Last October, early in their reunion run—entitled the “Rock Until We’re Dead Tour”--a fate nearly death fell longstanding member Dave Hoffman (aka “Winston Fink”). A sudden stroke found him out of commission and the remainder of the ill-named tour was scuttled.
Never say die, the Uglies rallied around Dave and delivered the magic from their music to revive his spirit and rally their energies. What resulted is their self named latest release: The Unbelievable Uglies. Though Winston has yet to speak, he does sing and more importantly influences this fresh collection of Uglies tunes with lyrics that hit home like never before.
Never Too Old (Nothing to Lose) is the group’s testimonial to their fans over the past five decades, reminding us that we’re still rockin’ and enjoying life—regardless of challenges that life throws at us. The memories from before rekindle us anew. The energy from this song flows into your soul.
Salted Nut Roll is uniquely an Unbelievable Uglies product that once again proves they’re nuts…..about the lyrics, the music, and the double-speak.
Go-Go Girl in Denial is NOT about a belly-dancer in an Egypt’s biggest river, but instead deals with those sweet young ladies, their lovely features, and what time ultimately does to all. Dave Hoffman with the lyrics, Bob Eveslage does the arrangement and score.
Two bluesy creations, Just Can’t Get The Blues and Got That Done capture the essence of the groups spirit and the tenacity shown by Dave Hoffman’s attitude. Dave is the second character singing on Got That Done.
My New Ulm roots are refreshed by Here We Go Again, originally created as an instrumental for the Cheesecake Coffeehouse establishment there. The lyrics by Greg Paul and Paul Lidstrom embody the joy felt by The Uglies through their music and enjoyed by their fans wherever they appeared.
The group is ready to resume touring—in memory of Mike “Shanny” Shannon, and in tribute to Winston Fink, aka….Dave Hoffman. They’ve drummed in young talent James Miller and vocalist/guitarist Jerry Uchanski to blend with Unbelievable Uglies Dave Hoffman, Greg Paul, Paul Lidstrom, and Bob Eveslage. The sound is tight, the lyrics meaningful, and the group is “spot on”.
Over forty years have sped by since they first burst from Detroit Lakes onto the MN Rock scene. Their reputation was established as Central MN’s Top Act—their shows were unforgettably grand productions that were not to be missed. In 2004, The Unbelievable Uglies were deservedly inducted in the The Minnesota Rock & Country Hall of Fame.
And now they’re back….The Unbelievable Uglies…..and you’ll love their rhythm and blues. Start spreading the news…….

"I HAVE ENJOYED THE NEW CD. I LIKE THE LYRICS AND GUITAR CHORDS (THERE IS AN OLD ROCKER IN ME YET.....I STILL HAVE MY AXE). I AM NOT SURPRISED THAT DAVE CAN SING. HE IS IN MY PRAYERS DAILY. AMAZING GRACE HAS A VERY DEEP PLACE IN MY HEART AS IT IS PIPED AT MILITARY FUNERALS. KEEP IT GOING...!!! THE MUSIC LIVES ON...!!!"
"We all had a great time at your dance and I was sure glad that your new CD was ready. I have been playing it almost non stop. The more I hear it the more I like it! Winnie's part on "Got That Done" did I hear you right that he did it in one take? The man still has it! You guys are very talented."

"Amazing grace" is Amazing.
It also brings back the line from Forest Gump "Have you found Jesus?". Forest replies " I didn't know He was lost". When hearing the Amazing Grace track I hear someone saying something about the 'Wild World of Sports' (?) at the end of the track.
I have your CD on when I go in to work, so it is becoming a sing along for me, real enjoyable."
THE FOLLOWING E-MAIL WAS RECEIVED FROM DOTTI HOLMBERG-WADDELL.
DOTTI WAS A MEMBER OF THE VERY TALENTED FOLK GROUP "THE GOLDEBRIARS"

AFTER RECEIVING THE CD, DOTTI WROTE:
I received the Unbelievable Uglies CD & it really rocks! It's so much fun to listen to with catchy lyrics & far-out instrumentals.....some wonderful new songs to add to our “favorite list”! It will definitely be a companion in our home & in our car for our musical entertainment!
I bought a compilation CD with two songs, ‘Research Into the Soul of Psychedelic Music’ and ‘Spiderman’ a couple years ago. Loved them. Checked out your web page and received your new release a few days ago. Love the music mates. Ordered some Salted Nut Rolls too… are they good or S.T.’s?

THIS REVIEW IS THE SECOND LETTER WE RECEIVED FROM "JN" IN ALASKA. THE FIRST LETTER WAS IN REFERENCE TO THE MELLOTRON USED ON THE SONG "NEVER TOO OLD". THAT CREDIT WAS ACCIDENTALLY OMTTED IN THE CREDITS SOMEHOW IN THE PRODUCTION OF THE CD. THAT CREDIT GOES TO PAM GROVE, WHO PLAYED THE MELLOTRON BEAUTIFULLY ON THIS SONG. SO GREG WROTE BACK TO "JN" TO 'LET IT BE KNOWN'. THIS REVIEW FOLLOWED:
Let me open by stating – I’ve never seen the Uglies perform and now I’ve listened to the CD over 30 times. I know the words. I know all the breaks. I love the instrumentals. Really love the instrumental style of the piano player.....Bob.
You could read the last line of this review and know what I really think about the Uglies.
Why did I buy your CD in the first place? A fellow worker, from Oakes, North Dakota, has talked about the Uglies off and on for over two years. I went to your web page and found you released a new CD.
I was a studio musician years ago. When I played your first song, I loved the Mellotron and melody. I’m proud to say, I’m now an Uglies Fan too.
(The Mellotron work – Pam Grove) She demonstrates the true technique needed with this instrument. Very very very good! Beautiful work… Please tell her!! How many different guitars did you use in the studio? I counted 6, right? How’d you get that raw sounding lead in “Salted Nut Roll” – I’ve not heard an amp sound like that….curious… (Kit Grove knows his stuff…very gifted engineer)
Anyone who listens to this CD should listen closely - first to the wonderful lyrics & melodies, then to the musicianship and finally, feel the sincerity and love the band projects from their music. I’m looking forward to seeing you in person. Which I promise, I WILL DO this year… Thanks Uglies!
Thanxs so much for sending the CD. Arrived early in the morning yesterday and was my first piece of rockandroll for the day and I was still playing it when I left office. Stopped the player only when the phone rang. It´s good to see that one of my fave midwest bands return on CD. My absolute faves are the spooky "Go-Go Girl in Denial“, the cool and crazy “Salted Nut Roll“ and “Got That Done“, an incredible and impressive recording with Dave on background vocals (be well soon – Dave). Same or similar I could say about any of the other songs on your CD.
40 years is a very long time and you guys still sound as fresh as in the old days. In about 1982, about 15 years upon their release, I heard your original 60s recordings for the first time. Now it has only taken less than a month to get your new CD after it has been released. I´m pleased we can finally share your music at the time it happens. And I enjoy it.
Keep being unbelievable ugly
Howdy again from Montana:
I am ordering your latest CD and it sounds great. I am excited that you are all born-again Christians as am I. Through the minefields of life I have peace that keeps me going on in faith. Your latest music sounds great.
How is Dave Hoffman doing? Is he well enough to join the band? Our prayers are with his full recovery.
